Two scholarships open for application!

Funds for extracurricular student activities


Do you have a good idea for a guest lecture or other student activity that promotes the field of geography? The South Swedish Geographical Society provides funds for projects that contribute to promoting the field of geography. This autumn you have the opportunity to apply for money to arrange activities that are normally not possible to carry out within the framework of a course. It can e.g. involve excursions or arrangements where you want to invite external guests. The activity must be open to more than the applicants. The activity should take place during November/December 2024.


The announcement is aimed at students at Lund University at

  • Department of Human Geography 
  • Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science

and who attend a master's program or the third year of a bachelor's program.


The applicant student group (with at least three students) shall submit a short application (max. 2 A4 pages) that describes the activity's content and purpose, intended participants and a brief estimate of costs. The application is sent to the society's secretary: linda.stihl@keg.lu.se


Maximum amount available for each application: 10 000 SEK.


Latest day for applications: 15 October 2024.


Members of SSGS are given priority. You can become a member by filling out a form on www.ssgs.se/membership and paying the membership fee of SEK 90.

An account of the activity should be reported back to the board in connection with one of the Society's events, or if that is not possible, in the form of a short written report.

Torsten Hägerstrand's scholarship supporting geographic research


Hereby, the Torsten Hägerstrand Fund announces two scholarships, to an amount of 12000 Swedish crowns each. One scholarship is directed to human geography, and one to physical geography. They are primarily directed at younger doctors or doctoral students in the latter part of their studies. The scholarships are meant to cover costs for field work or travel to conferences. An account of the work is to be sent to the Society, to be published on its webpage.


The application should consist of not more than two pages, plus necessary supplements. The application should describe the purpose of travel, destination, time of travel, and a specification of costs. An updated CV should be enclosed in the application. It should also include the applicant's name, date of birth, academic exam, position, affiliation, postal address, e-mail, and telephone number. The application needs to be signed. The application must have reached the Society no later than October 15th 2024.


Decisions regarding the scholarships will be sent to geographic departments at Swedish universities, and will be announced on the Society's webpage http://www.ssgs.se/.
